Japanese divorce
Posted by Anonymous . updated on 11/27/2008
I am American and was married in California on vacation. I was living in Japan at the time. I then got divorced in Japan and have since moved to Italy. My problem is that i can not find an attorney who can register my japanese divorce in California. No one has any experience that I have contacted. I am really looking for an attorney who has experience with this matter and can register my divorce in California. I have contacted over 20 but no attorney that I have met understands japanese divorces and how to register them.

Your divorce can be recognized in Italy with a sentence of the Court of Appeal of the italian region where you are living.

For what purpose do you wish to register the judgment in California. It is a valid judgment in California if it is valid in Japan. The only purpose of registering the judgment is to enforce a provision of that judgment, other than the portion of the judgment that dissolves the marriage. It can be registered under CCP Section 1713.3. Good Luck, Pat McCrary
