Sterling J. Stires's Summary

Education: California Western School of Law, J.D. (1998) University of San Diego, B.A. (Ocean Studies), (1996) Sterling Stires is the Senior Counsel of the firm, and has developed a civil litigation practice with an emphasis on maritime law. Along with matters involving the Jones Act, the Longshore and Harbor Workers' Compensation Act, Limitation of Shipowners Liability Act, Ship Repairers Liability, and general maritime law, Mr. Stires also practices in the areas of insurance coverage, insurance bad faith, business litigation and personal injury involving marine and non-marine claims. While in law school, Sterling received academic achievement awards in Maritime Law and Law of the Sea. Sterling had the high honor to have been selected by the State Bar of California to serve on the Admiralty & Maritime Law Consulting Group, which was formed by the Board of Legal Specialization to advise the State Bar regarding the establishment of maritime law as a certified legal specialty in California. Because of the hard work of the Consulting Group, the State Bar recently agreed to establish Admiralty and Maritime Law as a certified legal specialty. Sterling is a “Proctor in Admiralty,” as designated by the Maritime Law Association of the United States, and has served as the President of the Propeller Club of the United States, Port of San Diego (2006-2007), served as Vice President (2004-2006), and served on the Board of Governors of the Propeller Club from 2003 to 2008. Since 2003, Sterling has repeatedly been selected by the Office of Spill Prevention and Response, a division of the California Department of Fish and Game, to act as the Maritime Law Representative to the San Diego Harbor Safety Committee. In this capacity, and serving on a pro bono basis, Sterling has participated in the drafting and revising of provisions within the San Diego Harbor Safety Plan, which is mandated by the California Oil Spill Prevention and Response Act of 1990. As the Maritime Law Representative, Sterling has also taken part in the drafting and revising of regulations and by-laws of the Harbor Safety Committee, which have been enacted into California law. Serving in this capacity, Sterling has assisted in the development of the “Best Maritime Practices” for San Diego Bay, which has been incorporated into the San Diego Harbor Safety Plan. Because of his dedication and experience in maritime matters, Sterling manages the firm’s maritime practice. Professional: State Bar of California (1998) U.S. Supreme Court (2005) Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals (2005) United States District Court for the Southern District of California (1998) United States District Court for the Central District of California (2000) American Bar Association (1998) San Diego County Bar Association (1999) Proctor in Admiralty, Maritime Law Association of the United States Admiralty and Maritime Law Consulting Group, State Bar of California (2006-2008) Admiralty and Maritime Law Advisory Commission, State Bar of California (2008-Present) Maritime Law Representative, San Diego Harbor Safety Committee (2003-2009), voting member; member of the By-laws Drafting Working Group, and member of Best Maritime Practices Working Group Propeller Club of the United States, Port of San Diego (President, 2006-2007; Vice President, 2004-2006; Board of Governors, 2003-2008)

We utilized Sterling Stires on an especially challenging personal injury maritime case that extended over a several year period.  From start to finish he was responsive, creative, and provided us with well written, timely reports.  Those are the qualities we insist upon when assigning our cases to defense counsel.

chat Law School Review - California Western School of Law: I graduated from Cal. Western in 1998, and enjoyed my experience there. One thing that is great about Cal. Western is the "tri-mester" program, where you can graduate in 2 years rather than 3. I did it in 2 1/2 years - hard work for sure, but well worth it. I found that Cal. Western prepared me for taking the Bar, which I passed in my first attempt. I also had the great pleasure of working for the Director of International Legal Studies, Prof. John Noyes - great experience from a wonderful professor.
