Since re-entering private practice after government service, Ray Calamaro has advised and represented clients with matters before executive branch agencies and departments, including the White House; the Office of the U.S. Trade Representative; and the Departments of State, Defense, Treasury, Commerce, and Agriculture.
He also represents clients before both Houses of the U.S. Congress, including assisting foreign and domestic companies in supporting, opposing, or modifying legislation. His experience in the congressional process began with senior positions in both the legislative and executive branches of government. He continues to assist clients on trade-related and other legislative matters, acting as an advocate for a particular client or a coalition of companies. He has assisted both U.S. and non-U.S. companies in forming or participating in coalitions with an interest in federal policy or legislation.
From 1990 until 1994, Ray Calamaro practiced in Brussels where he represented U.S., European, Latin American, and Asian clients, advising on pending matters before the European Commission, Parliament, and Council. He also acts as an advocate before these bodies for clients with interests in EU directives and regulations.
Before practicing law in Washington, D.C. he served as U.S. Deputy Assistant Attorney General for legislative affairs where he assisted the Attorney General with regard to matters pending in Congress and represented the U.S. Department of Justice before Congress. Prior thereto, he was Legislative Director for a U.S. Senator.
Ray Calamaro has held senior positions in two transition governments: 1976-77 and 1992-93. Prior to joining Hogan & Hartson in 1995, he headed the Washington, D.C. and Brussels offices of a major New York-based law firm.
Representative Experience Represented a U.S. manufacturing company before U.S. Congress and the Executive Branch in preserving its domestic preference in military contracts.
