• Health Law Group.  Researched statutory, regulatory and case law using Lexis/Nexis and Westlaw; cite-checked legal briefs and analyses; assisted in document production; and general file maintenance and organization.  Provided substantial assistance with HIPAA Privacy Preemption Analysis (a 54-jurisdiction comparison of the federal Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act “Administrative Simplification” provisions against state laws and regulations governing confidentiality of patient medical information).

• Pro Bono.  Researched and drafted chapters for Patient’s Rights Manual published by the D.C. Bar Association (Health Law Section); and served as legal representative to an HIV-positive woman at the Whitman Walker Clinic in her appeal of denial of Social Security benefits requiring preparation of request for reconsideration.

• Health Care Group.  Assisted attorneys with fraud investigations and audits relating to anti-kickback and Medicare Secondary Payer.  Conducted hard copy document review for production in response to federal or state regulatory agency requests; utilized software including Iconect and Concordance to conduct document review.

• Litigation.  Provided substantive assistance on a qui tam action relating to false claims.  Responsibilities included using LiveNote to identify and review relevant deposition transcripts in preparation for trial; compiled and organized witness deposition transcripts and related exhibits; and assembled pleadings binders.

• Client Intake.  Gathered information from clients about cancer-related legal issues pertaining to e.g., employment, insurance, government benefits and estate planning; researched government and private resources and relevant federal and state laws; summarized findings for clients and drafted client letters. 

• Research.  Drafted 50-state summary of health insurance coverage statutes of cancer-related clinical trials.

My candidacy paper for the Whittier Law Journal was published in 2006.  The article, "Hidden Side Effects of Cancer on the Family:  The Struggle for Mandated Health Insurance Coverage of Clinical Trials," appears in 5 Whittier J. Child & Family Advocacy 577 (2006).
